About CUCS

Welcome to Cardiff University Chess Society!

Established in 2011, the Society's primary goal has always been to introduce the game of chess to a wider audience. Our doors are open to anybody with an interest in chess, and we are keen to present a friendly atmosphere geared towards teaching the basics, improving your play and ultimately having fun! Equipment is provided on the day; no need to bring your own.

For the more ambitious and competitive players, we also run in-house chess tournaments, playing against the clock as well as your opponent. Games become much more intense under these conditions, and there is nothing more satisfying than bringing a tough match to a successful close with seconds left on your clock!

Beyond the game itself, the Society runs socials, often directly following a games session with an evening in The Taf.

Society Events

Regular meetings are held every Monday from 5:00 to 7:00, continuing after this time if a match demands it. Our first meeting will be held on 8th October in Bute 1.50, then all further meetings this semester will be held in the Humanities Cafe on the ground floor; see below for further information.

Knockout tournaments are held from time to time; information about these will be listed below.
