There are around 150 different societies, the list is endless, as is the choice, but whatever society you join you are guaranteed an introduction to a whole new circle of people, interests and places to socialise in Cardiff!

Altsoc is Cardiff University's alternative music society. We aim to meet up a couple of times a week for nights out away from the typical mainstream destinations. There are also organised trips to further afield throughout the year. We meet every two weeks at Gassy Jacks then go onto Crtl-Alt-Del at the union; alternate weeks we do something different in town at local alternative clubs. The Belly Dancing Society aims to give the students of Cardiff University access to quality, professional Belly Dancing teaching that is suitable for all abilities.

We do not work towards achieving dance grades. We also perform at a variety of university and non-university based events including performing at balls and Go Global!

Our mission is to introduce the amazing art of capoeira to Cardiff University students. We will do this through training sessions twice a week with our experienced instructor, Contra Mestre Claudio Campos. During the classes, students will be taught the movements and music that make capoeira. We will encourage members to improve their fitness, strength, flexibility and rhythm. And to have fun whilst doing it!

We train twice a week, Wednesdays from 8-10pm in NoFitState rehearsal studio and Fridays 7.30-9.30pm in Talybont Sports Centre. Classes involve training the kicks, defences, acrobatics and other movements involved in capoeira, as well as learning to play the instruments and to sing in Portuguese. We will also have regular 'rodas' during the classes, which is when two people play the game of capoeira while the rest of the group makes the music. We hold regular social events at our sponsor's venue, Gwdihw and will do occasional performances, with the support of other capoeiristas from Cardiff and Bristol.

SCARS aims to cover all facets of animal rights, including but not limited to the meat and dairy industry, farmed animals, animal slaughter, veganism, live exports, the fur trade, the pet trade, animal culling, animal circuses and zoos, vivisection, greyhound and horse racing, fishing and hunting, animal culling and breed-specific legislation. These issues will be used as a basis for: • Member education/information dissemination • Identification of external events, lectures and peaceful demonstrations to attend • Creation of in-house events and information sharing sessions • Design of peaceful and law-abiding campaigns Campaigns will be carried out on a local and national level. Activities may involve leaflet campaigns, letter writing, collecting signatures for petitions, attending and organising peaceful demonstrations, raising awareness of animal rights abuses, and contacting external organisations and individuals.

• Hold regular meetings to discuss campaign progress, plan future events and provide a social atmosphere for like-minded students to meet each other. • Hold an AGM with elections for committee members. • Attend educational workshops and events, to hear speakers, and participate in social and entertainment activities, such as cruelty-free fairs. The society would arrange transport for these based on contributions from members (bus or public transport), and eventually travel will be subsidised by society funds. • Hold social events, which may comprise nights out, visiting vegan cafes and restaurants, volunteering at animal sanctuaries, cooking demonstrations and other activities as proposed by society members. • Engage in fundraising activities, both for the society itself and nominated external causes. These events are discussed below. • SCARS will function in a peaceful, law-abiding and respectful manner, maintaining ultimate respect for all forms of sentient life, including human beings. Activities will NOT comprise violence, abuse, or damage to property, and all members will be expected to abide by these conditions. SCARS will operate within Cardiff University regulations

Cardiff LINKS society aims to provide members with first aid training and the opportunity to cover first aid duties, provided they have passed the required courses. We also hope to meet on regular basis giving members the chance to socialise with each other.

Cardiff LINKS is a university student run youth division of St John Ambulance Wales. Here at Cardiff University we meet on Monday nights in the Student Union and complete first aid courses, practice training and listen to guest speakers. Not only do our members gain qualifications that are valid outside the division, they gain skills for life. We encourage our members who have gained the appropriate qualifications to go out on duty with other divisions in South Wales.

CMS enables students to meet and network with 'bike-minded' people and the wider biking community.

Cardiff Motorcycle Society (CMS) is a social group for anyone interested in motorcycles. We are the only motorcycle society associated with the Cardiff Guild of Societies. CMS provide a forum for current riders, inexperienced riders (learners) and any person interested in motorcycles (non licensed) to socialise and share experiences. The Computer Science and Informatics Society (ComScI) is an award winning society dedicated to the students of the Cardiff School of Computer Science and Informatics. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid in more than 60 countries to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters or exclusion from healthcare. In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centres for malnourished children and offers mental health care. When needed, MSF also constructs wells, dispenses clean drinking water, and provides shelter materials like blankets and plastic sheeting. Through longer-term programmes, MSF treats patients with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness and HIV/AIDS and provides medical and psychological care to marginalized groups such as street children. Founded by doctors and journalists in 1971, MSF is now a worldwide movement with sections in 19 countries and an international coordination office in Geneva, Switzerland.

Cardiff University Friends of MSF raises funds and awareness for MSF through charity events, information nights and speakers, all the money of which goes directly to MSF itself.

As a society we intend to provide dance classes which aim to improve dance technique, fitness and confidence. We offer the opportunity to all our members to perform and to become part of Troupe which is a select group of FAD who perform and represent the society in many different events. Above all, the aim is for members to enjoy themselves and have fun shaking their Funky Arse.

We provide three dance classes a week on a Wednesday, catering for all levels of ability. We also hold regular socials for the members and plan to go on tour each year.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatu allah wa barakatuh (the peace, blessings and mercy of God be upon you) The Cardiff University Islamic Society (Cardiff ISoc) is an organisation formed by students, for students, to increase understanding about the religion of Islam and attempt to dispel the myths and misconceptions surrounding recent world events. In addition, the society strives to support the Muslim student, to be free to practise their faith and socialise with peers in an otherwise intimidating environment. Cardiff ISoc runs events throughout the year, and range from small socials to events running over a whole week, furthermore we have regular sporting events; these are open to all, regardless of race, gender or creed. In all our decisions, we strive to follow the revelation of the Qur’an and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Cardiff ISoc is chartered through the Cardiff University Students Union and is an affiliate of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies in the UK (FOSIS). FOSIS is the premier Muslim Student representative body, as well as the Muslim Council of Wales. The society is not affiliated to any political groups and steers clear of pursuing a sectarian agenda. Although we are an independent body, we collaborate with the wider Muslim community, incorporating local mosques, schools, colleges and youth groups. We run four main ensembles: Jazz Orchestra, Thursdays 4-5.30. Big Band (audition required), Wednesdays 7-8.30. Saxophone Ensemble, Fridays 5-6. Jazz Choir, Tuesdays 6-7. If these aren't for you then you can set up your own small ensemble! We provide many opportunities to perform as well as chances to see live jazz.

Kenyan Orphan Project was started in 2001 by medical students to support orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya on issues of health, education and social welfare. Fighting poverty, disease, social exclusion and injustice. KOP is committed to sustainable projects that will continue to assist local people for the long term and not just provide temporary relief Since then more than 500 students from 14 different UK universities - including CARDIFF since 2007 - have been helping to support KOP projects. 2011 will see the fourth KOP Cardiff trip to Kenya, with the trip, as well as society membership open to people from all courses.

The Kenyan Society is a society for one and for all, wanting to provide something for everyone. It aims to introduce the enriched Kenyan culture in to Cardiff showcasing the county's food, clothing, dialect and history; bring Kenyan students all around Cardiff together; help those first year Kenyan students feel at ease away from home; and furthermore it aims to raise awareness of the political, social and economical issues in Kenya which would give many an insight of hardships faced by people in developing countries. While the popular throughout the Asian continent, spreading to India, the Middle East, Central Asia, Iran, Israel, Turkey and Russia. Currently, the Korean wave is starting to hit the shores of the UK.

At University we are all looking for something.... But how many times do we take a step back to question what we really want out of life? Is life simply a game of wanting more, more then some more and then you die? What does it mean to be successful? The aim of the Cardiff KC SOC is to bring spirituality into the 21st century for everyone regardless of who you are. We will be inviting awesome speakers to have interactive discussions on everything from habits-relationships-studying-philosophy and so much more. There is over 20 KC Socs around the country and there's opportunity to get involved with inter university events where you can do anything from painting, feeding homeless people, drama productions to trips abroad as well as meeting some really cool people. We aim to cultivate educational, social and cultural awareness and understanding amongst Malaysians and other communities in Cardiff and the United Kingdom in general. We believe it is essential to provide a platform to instil patriotism as well as celebrating diversities in each others’ cultures.

Every year, the Society organises three main events that cover the aspects of education, arts and culture, and sports. Our target is to expose Malaysia’s beautiful and diverse culture to foreigners as well as expand our horizons within the Malaysian communities in Cardiff, across the United Kingdom as well as Europe. Our most renowned event, the Festival of Diversity, was given its name by the Student Union, and has been by unspoken tradition, the opening or closing act during Go Global, the official ‘international week’ of Cardiff University. The Cardiff European Games organised by the Society is also the only major sports event held by a Malaysian Students’ Society in the UK, which incorporates universities from Europe and is authorized by Education Malaysia. The events held by the Society have clearly earned recognition from various organisations and parties. Apart from that, we do organize socials for our members once every fortnight, ranging from movie outings to day trips. We provide a platform for members to relax from studies and give them a opportunity to hangout with fellow Malaysians while experiencing the Welsh and British culture.

The Motown appreciation society aims to bring together Students within Cardiff University who have a shared interest and appreciation of the genre of music that is Motown. We also hope to develop peoples knowledge of the subject through group discussions and social events.

• Hold weekly meetings in which all members are invited to bring along or recommend their favourite Motown track for the group to listen to, we hope that this will deepen our own and our group members appreciation of different Motown artists and sub genres. • Hold monthly Motown themed film nights where we get together and watch films such as ‘’Ray’’ and ‘’At last’’ which tell the story of Motowns biggest stars. The aim of the society: To enable university students to gain PADI qualifications, which are world renowned, how ever experienced the student may or may not be. In doing this we aim to bring together likeminded people to experience diving recreationally and to enhance any course or career choices where applicable. Scientific diving is about engaging people in an underwater experience to further enhance knowledge of the environment, trust between others, and also to improve research in this unique environment. This society appeals to many people whether your interests lie in underwater photography, coral reef conservation or mapping habitats etc. as well as those who wish to dive recreationally. It enables you to explore a whole new world. Our society appeals to both beginners, with try dives and opportunities to qualify, and to more advanced divers with further opportunities to gain higher qualifications, or to specialise in environmental and scientific aspects of diving. We operate our diving through Ocean Quest, who are based in Porthcrawl and have many highly qualified diving instructors.

Throughout the year, we will organise competitions for members which could result in your work being displayed within the university or at local galleries. We plan to run visits to exhibitions,and we endeavour to invite guest photographers to our meetings. There may also be an opportunity for the society to take a day-trip to London. Cardiff University Pole Dance Society provides pole dancing classes to our members in a safe, relaxed and social environment, allowing the individuals to improve their strength, flexibility, coordination, confidence, and self-esteem. We also offer a number of FREE fitness classes per week which complement pole dancing and allow our members to become well-rounded dancers, with an emphasis on fitness rather than the stigma associated with pole dancing. It’s a fantastic achievement to master the spins, holds, technique and control necessary within the sport and we support and encourage each of our members to feel that sense of achievement as they improve through their lessons - regardless of their gender, size and shape. We promote a healthy body shape, not a thin one.

PsyCardiff is an academically and socially-minded society. We work closely with the department to deliver top careers-related events and initiatives. Welcome! And if you've been here before, welcome back! We are the Cardiff University Science Fiction & Fantasy Society. During term time we meet every Monday evening at 7.30pm in Milgi Lounge (213 City Road, Cardiff) to discuss anything related to sci-fi and fantasy, and every Friday evening at 6.30pm we decend on Birt Acres Lecture Theatre in Bute Building. Several times each year we have a costume party with prizes for the best costume. We also have other random sci fi events throughout the year including: conventions, pub crawls, tournaments, games, meals, secret santa and so much more.

Sexpression is a sexual health and relationships education programme. We teach individually designed lessons to 11-18 year olds in South Wales’ schools. Currently we deliver 5 interactive lessons including puberty and a lesson on sexually transmitted infections. Games, presentations and discussions are incorporated to make lessons stimulating and thought-provoking. Each Sexpression volunteer is specially trained in sexual health topics, teaching methods and child protection to ensure that they feel fully competent. The society is run by an enthusiastic committee with lots of experience. We are dedicated to providing good sexual health education, and ensure our material is continually developed and improved. Being a volunteer dramatically improves communication skills and confidence, and is a lot of fun!

- To provide members with the opportunity to gain advice on academic, social and personal matters from medical students in the years above. This year this will be done through facebook groups, and our website. Facebook for an intimate means of contacting medical students for some who may have more personal welfare issues. Academically, information on the “mystery” exams such as short written communication, rough exam timetables, booklists, and a calendar of SIMA events for the year will be made available on our website and facebook group. - To build a strong support system for pre-clinical students by providing Anatomy revision sessions to aid with examinations. We will be running as usual three anatomy revision sessions, two for freshers and one for second years. We are currently aiming to work with CUSS, Cardiff Surgical Society, to give the best possible preparation for the pre-clinical anatomy exams. - To build a strong support system for pre-clinical students by providing formative exam sessions to aid with familiarisation of exam situation and medical school papers. We aim to run several formative exams before Easter for first years, based on questions reviewed and approved by panel representatives and panel staff. The format of these exams, time and venue are currently under consideration. - To promote peer-assisted learning (PAL) and provide opportunities for members to get involved with this scheme in order to develop and learn new skills. Any medical student is encouraged to join and we aim to provide those who wish with the opportunity to be involved in the teaching so that they may acquire new skills as well as being able to help their fellow peers and raise money for charity at the same time. A “revision note network” through which medical students in senior years donate their revision notes, SIMA compile the best in a concise manner and distribute them to lower years for a reasonable price to raise more money for charity, is currently also underway. - To provide clinical students with tutorials and OSCE tips from senior medical students or qualified doctors. - To use academic events to fundraise for our charity Iraq Relief – a charity that assists in the provision of healthcare services to Iraqi children. At the moment, the concept of “selecting a new charity every year based on a majority vote” is being considered. A problem SIMA has encountered constantly is that a large proportion of individuals have little interest in supporting a charity they are not familiar with. We are exploring re-branding SIMA to be a more generic society of revision for medics, and asking people to vote for a charity they would like to support. This idea is based on the idea that if you can relate to a charity that you chose, you are more likely to be more enthusiastic about donating and fundraising for that charity. - To use the concept of “project managers” within the committee. The committee’s objective this year is further improve our organisation skills with the idea of project managers; assigning a particular revision session to one committee member, who must oversee and gather a network of members to carry out the project.

Sino-Cardiff Students' Society is a new Chinese student group in Cardiff University Students' Union. It has now become the ONLY affiliated Chinese student society in Cardiff University. SCSS aims to act as a bridge between Chinese students and Cardiff University to provide information, help and activities.

History SKIP used to be a purely healthcare society, however, we now recruit students from any course so get involved! In 1999 five medical students from The University of Wales College of Medicine, as it was then called, were invited to Novinki Children's Home outside Minsk; one of 35 orphanages in Belarus. The 200 young people aged 5-25 living there all have disabilities ranging from autism to schizophrenia and Down's syndrome to severe cerebral palsy. SKIP Cardiff (formerly BACCUP) is the original branch of the now national charity, SKIP. SKIP (Students for Kids International Projects) is completely volunteer led right the way through to qualified doctors and other professionals who volunteer as part of our National Committee and Executive Board. For the past 13 years SKIP Cardiff (formerly BACCUP)has been sending students to Novinki Children's Home, and more recently Cherven Children's Home, in Belarus. Both of these are disabled orphanages where many of the children are victims of an impoverished society. Their families often live in Minsk but are too poor to afford childcare or be able to stay home and look after them. In Novinki, the children were regarded as objects to feed, change and deal with rather than children that deserved care and stimulation. The fifty high dependency children were being looked after by two carers working 24 hour shifts. Since starting in Belarus, SKIP Cardiff (alongside other charities) have managed to achieve a number of things: * Supplemented the wage of a teacher * Worked alongside carers to improve the working practices of the orphanage * A 'medical' ward enabling greater government funding for care * A stick is no longer used to punish children * Food is more nutritious * The children have enough clothes and shoes * There are more nurses to care for high dependency children * The children have been integrated into the community The students have been involved in a challenging and rewarding project. We feel that every student who has been to Novinki/Cherven has had an amazing and unforgettable experience. We have now withdrawn from Belarus as our interventions have become as sustainable as possible and are now in the very exciting times of setting up a new project in Zambia. This summer 4 of our committee went to Zambia and conducted a research trip which consisted of meeting several NGOs and visiting different projects and communities. It is looking very promising and we will be setting up a project based on education in community schools this year. Currently we are looking to recruit people for our committee and also for keen fundraisers to help us make this project a reality! To tempt you more we will be sending a pilot project out for 3 weeks this summer (July/August 2013)and if you get involved you will have the opportunity to be a part of this. We are currently aiming to set up a new project in Zambia which will be: - community based - sustainable - aimed at improving the health, education and welfare of vulnerable children As a charity we also aim to develop globally and culturally aware students who can advocate for local and global health in the future. Slash Dance is a dance Society, formed in 2007 by some ambitious ,hard-working and creative indiviuals. It first set out to be a hip hop musical dance society incorporation HIP-HOP//SLASH Ballet //SLASH Latin //SLASH Jazz// SLASH Contempory//SLASH all sorts of different types of dancing... hence the name "SLASH" Slash has changed over the years, trying to incorporate many different styles of hip-hop dance, including house, locking, popping, waacking, tutting, krunk and many more. We hold a workshop each year where choreographers from Cardiff and London come down to teach their style of dance. Expect BIG names :).

Students for Life exists to promote life from conception until natural death to the students of Cardiff University... and beyond! We aim to increase awareness of pro-life issues, and also provide support and advice to those who may find themselves in need of it, in a professional or personal capacity.

We aim to have a speaker visit the society at least once a month. These speakers are extremely knowledgable and the formal talk is always followed by informal discussion over food and drink! Active members of the society take part in national campaigns, and also attend the youth pro-life conference in Rotherham each year. We fundraise for charities which provide support to women in crisis pregnancies, and also offer a signposting service to those in need of it.

Cardiff University Surgical Society (CUSS) is aimed at medical students interested in pursuing postgraduate careers in surgery. In response to the increasing standards expected of junior doctors when applying for trainee posts, CUSS offers a range of expertise, activities and events that will enhance students CVs at an early stage in their training. At the same time CUSS organises several events relevant to all medical students, for example: anatomy revisions sessions and a fortnightly journal club, meaning that membership is not exclusive to those individuals determined to become surgeons. Finally, we also contribute to the Royal College of Surgeons of England Medical Students Liaison Committee, where issues affecting surgical training are discussed on a national basis.

The Cardiff University Purcell Singers are a non-auditioning choir open to all students of the university. We aim to provide a fun, relaxed environment in which students can make friends, sing choral music from Baroque to Pop and achieve a fantastic sound in our performances each semester.

We sing! We have weekly rehearsals and perform a wide range of material, not just Purcell. The majority of the songs come from the 20th and 21st Centuries, with a few nods to the older music of the Western tradition. The choir is divided into Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass (SATB) and performs primarily accompanied pieces either written or arranged for this ensemble. We also aim to sing at least one piece with the Concert Orchestra each term, offering members the rare chance to sing with a full orchestral accompaniment.

UNICEF is is a programme created by the United Nations to protect and promote children’s healthcare, education, equality and rights in countries in need. We aim at helping UNICEF in its cause by raising awareness (main goal) and raising money through meaningful events.

We organise different fundraising and informative events throughout the year. Some events are held every year such as the music charity concert, the football 5-aside tournament and the cake sales. Other events follow the different campaigns that have a link with UNICEF. If you want to hold an event with us, we're open to do a collaboration.

This society aims to gather the many vegetarians, vegans and students who enjoy veggie food at Cardiff University and give them the opportunity to meet, discuss their views and try out the vegetarian and vegan food available in Cardiff and review restaurants in the area. It also gives members the opportunity to share recipes, socialise with each other, develop their reviewing skills, feel empowered that they are making a difference with their food choices and develop their debating skills. We can represent vegetarian and vegan students and their views and make sure they are considered when the university is catering for students.

Wildsoc is a society dedicated to increasing awareness of local and global conservation issues among students of Cardiff University. The society also aims to undertake direct conservation efforts at a local level through fundraising and work parties at local nature reserves. Associations between Wildsoc and Non-Governmental Conservation Organisations (NGOs) would be mutually advantageous through fundraising and advertising. We aim to establish such links and act on them with campaigning and fundraising events that will provide our members with experience in charity work and should provide a fun and exciting opportunity for education and involvement of the student community of Cardiff. Through educational courses and trips members should encounter conservation at work while enjoying a social, friendly atmosphere. Opportunities for networking among fellow students and conservation bodies associated with the society should be frequent for Wildsoc members. The primary aim of Wildsoc for the academic year 08/09 was to increase membership and participation in events. This was achieved successfully with the society picking up ‘Best Society Activity’ and runners up for ‘Most Improved Society’ at the society awards. The emphasis for the academic year 09/10 has shifted towards increasing Wildsocs’ influence and participation in environmental issues within the university and local community, through fundraising and awareness events, while continuing to run successful social and educational events. Our recent merge with the Local Wildlife Trust is an exciting venture, one that will expand upon the people we meet and work with, and future role in relevant environmental issues.

We aim to provide fun and educational activities, from getting muddy outdoors to scientific talks by wildlife experts. The society is an opportunity for people with similar interests meet and put their passion to use, while usually involving many and opportunity for dressing up and of course, drinking! More sober activities include: -Nelson Vern: conservation work at a local reserve conducting coppicing, litter picking, trail clearing etc. This year we hope to explore more of the parks owned by the Local Wildlife Trust -Llysdinam: Cardiff university's very own field centre in the middle of Wales, set in idyllic countryside, is an awesome weekend for badger watching, bird ringing, bat walks, otter stakeouts, and visits to local areas of interest. -Campaigning: If you feel there is a local environmental issue you want to fight for, we'll make it happend! Last year many hours of hard work were put into saving Bute Park. Thankyou! -Educational talks: Through the monthly events held with th Local Wildlife Trust and its members, to tours around museums, zoo, parks, or even out in the field when foraging for fungi, or admiring Cardiff's local wildlife. -Camping: For the tougher of you, impromptu camping trips are loved by all! -Competitions and fundraising: Raffles, photography competitions, socials, buckng sheep nights, parties. -Birdwatching

We organise regular socials for pharmacy students whilst also raising money for our selected charity.
