Cardiff University Committee Elect Minutes

Date 24th April 2012       Time 7.30pm

Attendees: Isaac Paine (IP),Rhys Jenkins (RJ), Molly Paatz (MP), Nour Belal (NB), Emma Ridges (ER) , Ellie Jervis (EJ), Lisa-Marie Russell (LMR), James Hankinson (JH), Ishani Murkherjee (IM), Oliver Wannell (OW), Gemma Nash (GN), Alex Crabbe(AC)

Apologies – James Rees (JR), William Akman (WA)

Welcome – IP clarifies that all committee members are welcome to all meetings, no distinction between committee and non-committee roles.

Sponsorship – IP demonstrates brochure to be sent to firms to secure sponsorship. Packages available to firms including website, law ball, clothing, student law journal, unprecedented, public speaking series, lunch clubs, Law Society membership cards, sports day.

NB – develop unprecedented sponsorship, combine with interviews with firms.

EJ – request for socials commission to be kept for socials. 

IP, AC, RJ – wait until sponsorship to be confirmed to vote.

IP – lists firms approached and yet to approach. Requests committee members submit brochure ideas by the 25th May 2012. Email to IP.

Hoodies and Polos

IP – two different quotes, Clifton Clothing and YC Sports.

EJ – examples of the different companies hoodies from different years shown to committee. 

LMR – unlikely design will be exactly the same between the two.

EJ – unsure if YC sports price included VAT

VOTE – YC Sports – 4 Clifton Clothing- 7 Abstained – 1 (WA and JR sent votes in beforehand)

Law Ball 

ER – contacted various other locations other than City Hall. Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay same grandeur as City Hall, Wales Millennium Centre also available but only on the 16th March – perhaps too late.
Yet to approach City Hall, will do so ASAP to compare.

AC – concern that distance from Cathays could put people off

LMR – after party will be in town anyway, distance not a problem

ER – could explore transport options

IP,NB,MP, - people will get taxis regardless, focus on ticket price.

ER,RJ – Cardiff Castle too small a venue.

ER – 2nd March ideal date as no rugby on at same time.

IP – when decided on two venues, put to a vote from members on the website. Can decide ticket price when sponsorship is allocated.

AC – want to make raffle in conjunction with Innocence Project more prominent this year.

Agreed.

Manifestos – IP – committee members to read each other’s manifestos on Facebook to encourage to support each other. Encourage attendance at other committee events.

Website – IP – Huge publicity opportunity. Campus Groups is free to use.

Decision to keep this years website domain cardiffunilawsociety.co.uk but redirect it to campus groups to save on hosting fee.

Can sell tickets for socials via online shop. SU cover card costs.

All officers will be able to edit site. 

IP – request content ideas to be sent to IP or NB.

AC – will discuss with other innocence project members as to how integrated Innocence Project and Law Society will be – keep off website for now.

NB – keep Law Revision Aid group on Facebook, perhaps create forum split by topic on Campus Groups.

IP – create something similar on website, members only.

Website ideas in time for sponsorship – 25th May. Only ideas, not full content needed.

OW – Society awards – didn’t win last year. Good use of campus groups is a factor along with integration with other societies.

IP – will find out criteria in advance to work towards

GN – could link up with the societies of the integrated degrees.

Honorary President

IP – First step to building up alumni network. Show our support and thanks to individual who has helped the school above and beyond.

General consensus positive towards idea.

IP – suggests two candidates.

RJ – suggest committee think of further suggestions for next meeting.

IP  - if committee know of further sponsorship links, let IP know. Smaller firms might not want to invest in sponsorship

RJ – no harm approaching

GN, MP – look at south west, many students from that region.

Three Courts Walk – JH – Walk on Thursday, concern to get as many people as possible involved. 6pm start and drinks reception afterwards. Register online with Julie Price or donate online.

IP – raising money for Access to Justice Foundation. Walk takes around 1 hour.

JH – spread information amongst friends.

AOB – IP – requests volunteers for open day on 25th April to contact Hannah Brown ASAP.

GN – focus on friendly atmosphere for future open days.

RJ – If sponsorship allows, would committee prefer cheaper membership or cheaper law ball tickets?

MP – membership includes discount on law ball, so cheaper membership might in turn encourage greater law ball sales.

ER – Cheaper law ball tickets might encourage second and third years to attend.

IP – treasurers report will go online to show members when money goes.

OW expressed concern about revealing all account. RJ would rather be transparent and clear.

NB – requests contacts with a camera to film welcome video for website.

GN, RJ, IP – know someone. Will ask.

EJ – Suggests final joint social with outgoing social secretaries

MP, RJ, EJ, - Friday 8th June good date.

LMR – When does subcommittee election occur?

IP – New academic year

OW – need for at least 3 week period.

RJ – suggestion to hold hustings and AGM separately this year

IP – Agreed.

OW – will take care of arrangements for outgoing members of staff.
