The Wado Kai Karate club is the most successful martial arts club in Cardiff University, bringing home medals for the University from every major competition entered in the past 15 years. Hopefully with your help this can continue! The club is a fantastic way to meet people, get fit and learn self-defence. In joining our club you get the chance to represent your University on a national level at various tournaments and most importantly have a bit of fun!
Everyone from beginner to black belt is more than welcome as are anyone from other styles of karate. Under the guidance of Sensei Nici Gittens (3rd Dan) you have the opportunity to embrace all aspects of the martial art including basics, kata, dojo sparring and competitive fighting techniques.
Training
We currently train once a week on a Tuesday, 7-9pm at the dojo in the Talybont Sports Centre and each session costs £2.00. The session is instructed by Sensei Nici Gittens and covers a bit of everything:
- Basics: the essential skills and techniques. A great starting point for beginners and good for revision and refining for more experienced students
- Kata: pre-decided sequences of movements and techniques, more traditional, but still challenging, and essential for grading and getting to your coveted Black Belt!
- Fighting: competition and dojo
Public sessions are also held at Maindy leisure centre every Wednesday (7:30-9:00pm) and Sunday (3:30-5:00pm). Wednesday is a fighting session while Sunday is mainly basics and kata, with a bit of fighting thrown in for fun!
Membership for one year in the club costs £15.00 but this covers the cost of your license which is required if you wish to grade.
